The Nelson Mandela University  International Language Centre offers 2 seventeen-week English programmes for you to choose from – both courses are offered twice a year:

Elementary English

This programme covers the basics in reading, writing, listening and speaking so that students can deal with everyday situations.

17 Weeks

February – June / July – November

As the course progresses, students should move from Elementary to Pre-Intermediate level.

Pre-Intermediate English

The programme is designed to improve proficiency levels to the extent that international students will be able to cope with English as a medium of instruction.

During the English programme, students will be assisted with their application for further studies at Nelson Mandela University.

Placement Testing

Students will complete an English placement test at the onset of the programme (at no extra cost) to determine their level of proficiency. Based on their test results, students will then be placed into either the Elementary or Pre-intermediate class.

On completing Elementary English

  • Listen and process information related to immediate personal
  • Read a variety of short, simple texts
  • Speak with increasing confidence on a range of familiar topics
  • Write short, simple texts related to areas of immediate needs
  • Apply basic grammatical structures

On completing Pre-intermediate English

  • Listen and process information accurately and critically
  • Speak fluently, clearly , confidently and with an awareness of
    audience and situation
  • Read a variety of texts with comprehension, enjoyment and critical
  • Write purposefully and with increased accuracy
  • Apply grammatical structures and linguistic conventions.
